This month, our team have been busy releasing updates to Land App, including a new Agrofrestry Designer Toolkit, updates to Land App Mobile, new data layers and more!

All user Updates

Update to the Tree Surgery option in the Countryside Stewardship Template
The Tree Surgery option (TE11) on the Countryside Stewardship template has been split into 2 feature types: TE11A for limb diameter 20cm or less with payment rate of £73.36 and TE11B for limb diameter over 20cm with payment rate of £146.72. Any features previously assigned to TE11 will be mapped to TE11A by default.

Updates to Bing basemaps
We have now migrated to Azure maps. Azure uses the same data as Bing, so the resolution and update frequency will remain the same. We are still looking into better imagery basemaps that we can incorporate in the future. Due to this transition, we can no longer support the ‘Bing with labels’ basemap, but we will be adding the OS Open Names data layer as soon as possible, so this can be used in combination with the Azure basemap to achieve the same effect. Keep an eye out on our upcoming product updates to see when this data layer is live for you to use.

New SHINE data download available
The Selected Heritage Inventory for Natural England (also known as SHINE) data is now available as a Data Download. Here’s how to use it:

  • Use your SBI number to view non-designated historic and archaeological features on your land that could benefit from management under Countryside Stewardship and may be unsuitable for certain actions under the Sustainable Farming Incentive
  • Data must be used only for Environmental Land Management
  • Find help guidance here

For Standard and Professional subscribers, the SFI and CS Validator tools now incorporate SHINE features as part of their checks as well.

NEW TOOLKIT – Agroforestry Designer Toolkit
The Agroforestry Designer Toolkit is designed to help you easily create agroforestry designs tailored to your specific needs. Find out more about the toolkit here.
The Agroforestry Designer Toolkit offers three primary design options:

  1. Linear Agroforestry: Perfect for alley cropping or linear silvopasture, this tool helps users design tree rows interspersed with crops or grazing areas.
  2. In-field Grid/Dispersed: Ideal for wood pasture or dispersed planting, this tool helps plan tree spacing for shade, shelter, and biodiversity.
  3. Traditional Orchard: Designed for those interested in creating or maintaining orchards under schemes like the Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier, with guidelines on planting densities and potential payment rates.

Each tool is tailored to help users generate practical designs that can be easily modified to meet the specific requirements of their land and government incentive programs such as the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) and Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier (CS).

Data Layer Updates
We’re constantly evolving and improving our data layer library. This month’s updates include:

  • New Soil Parent Material Model (1km) in Geology category
  • New OS Open Rivers in Water category
  • Updated Nitrate Vulnerable Zones have been updated to the latest version
  • Updated OS Grid Reference & OS Grid Reference Labels can now be found in the Ordnance Survey category  instead of Landscape
  • Updated CRoW Common Land updated for Wales & CRoW Open Country (Wales) split out into separate data layer

Most Requested Updates
We’re constantly evolving and improving the product based on your feedback. This month’s updates include:

  • When selecting multiple features of the same geometry type, the measurements (i.e. area/length) will be totalled in the attributes panel, instead of saying “Multiple”, e.g. if you select multiple polygons, the area will be totalled.
  • It is now possible to reset feature types. Use the “Reset feature type” button in the feature type selection panel. Due to this, we have removed the “Common” category of feature types, which included the default features types of point, line, area as it is no longer necessary.
  • The order of the Draw options (i.e. line, area) was inadvertently changed (e.g. arrow was moved to the top), so we have now reverted that back to how it was before
  • When printing on Ordnance Survey or Ordnance Survey Light basemaps, we will now default to a print quality of Standard instead of Premium. Ordnance Survey will default to a Colour basemap, and Ordnance Survey Light will default to a Grayscale basemap.

standard Updates

Split features on Land App Mobile
One of our most popular drawing tools on web has now been added to the mobile app – you can now cut features into 2 or more separate features. This should come in handy if you need to separate a hedgerow feature mid-way through a survey or if you are taking some boundaries for a walk and want to cut off a field corner or buffer.
